“Unexpected. I received dozens of messages, I was overwhelmed by phone calls. There are even those who have referred me to doctors and specialists. Incredible”.

Can you rest assured?
“Of course, on the contrary, this return of popularity helps me. I realized that people have not forgotten me. I joined two different types of public: I was Pippo Baudo and Sandro Ciotti put together, an atomic bomb. I’d like to go back to work on TV. Have you ever regretted having succumbed to his flattery, ruining the image of a “serious” journalist?
“No, Mara changed my life. We were having dinner in a New York club with Renzo Arbore, during the 1994 World Cup, when he asked me to participate in Domenica In. I was already conducting 90 ° Minuto and she was good at gradually throwing me into the show. Criticism and envy of colleagues were immediately unleashed ”.

Which commentary were you most fond of?
“To that of Bonomi and Rossi’s gold in K2 1000 meters at the Sydney Olympics: ‘Look left, look right, Italy wins!’. Even if my name will be forever linked to the Abbagnale brothers. Yet the commentary of the victory in Seoul, which went down in history, was not even supposed to be there. The night before I was playing cards with Evangelists when news of a strike arrived. At that point, instead of going to bed, I wandered around Seoul, in the bars frequented by the American military. Only when I returned to the hotel at dawn did I discover that the strike had been lifted. I rushed to do the commentary without even the sheet of the finalists. I went aboard the boats with my voice, perhaps also out of a certain spirit of revenge after the great injustice suffered in 1968: Giuliano Spingardi and I deserved to participate in the Olympics in Mexico, we would have been in the final. Instead they excluded us and I saw those Games only as a spectator. That anger”.

“I am born and die commentator. I wasn’t as whimsical as the great Beppe Viola, but I knew sport and its dynamics. With the players there was a different freedom than now. I invented the pre-match interviews, when I got off the bus, and as soon as the match was over, I took the players under my arm and confessed them on the sidelines, first of all. Not to mention the champagne showers they gave me in the locker room during the championship parties. The idea of ​​having Maradona interview his teammates after the victory was brilliant. “I was always out and about, sometimes I was able to pick them up from school, but I realize I wasn’t always there. Maybe I could have given something more from an emotional point of view. And at 50, I would have had to give up the life of a gypsy and pursue another kind of career. I didn’t think they would follow in my footsteps: Susanna is on Tg5, Gianluca works in the news at La7, but he would be interested in following sport ”.
